Top 10 Tricks to Beat the Heat

The people of Erie, PA endured many high temperatures in the month of July. The average temperature this year was 81 degrees. This is one degree higher than the history average of the city of Erie. Both Philadelphia and Pittsburghsaw many highs in July. Philadelphia had an average of 89 degrees and Pittsburgh saw an average of 84 degrees.
Usually as the summer heat rises, so does certain expenses. Most people will start to use their air conditioning more and maybe eating out more because the kitchen can get hot with a stove being on.

So, with July being the hottest month of the year, it is important to know the best ways to stay safe and keep cool for the remainder of the summer season.
(1)Carry a water bottle with you at all times—reusable bottles are great for the environment and bottles that are metal and double-walled will keep your water nice and cool for hours to come—if you have a dog, grab them a portable dog bowl so they will not become dehydrated
(2) Wear lighter colored clothing when in the sun—instead of absorbing the heat, it will do a better job of reflecting the light/heat

(3) Try parking your car in the shadewhenever out and about—steering wheel and windshield covers are also a great investment
(4) Dog Owners: before taking your dog out on a walk, touch the sidewalk using the palm of your hand. If the ground is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog to walk on—try early mornings and evenings when the sun is going down

(5) Make sure to wear sunscreen every day, especially on your face, back of the neck and any exposed skin—even on the days with overcast, UV rays are still making their way through the cloud coverage
(6) Reduce the amount of sunshine coming into your houseto keep your house cool. This can help keep the electricity bill on the low side by limiting the amount of sunlight entering the home—maybe even try blackout curtains

(7) Gardening and yard work—If you like to garden or must do yard work, try wearing a wide brimmed hat, and grab a cold/frozen rag to drape around your neck to help fight heatstroke

(8) Exercising—try working out during the early morning or evening when the sun is not as prominent, but mostly try to workout inside, preferably at a gym with air conditioning.
(9) Plan a water day for your kidswith water balloons, slip n slide and maybe even sprinklers. A day at the pool would even be a great idea

(10) Cold Dinnersare also a great idea—anything that does not have you working over a hot stove for long periods of time; dinners like pasta salad, chicken orzo salad, mediterranean tuna salad and pineapple mango salsa chicken lettuce wraps
